Happy August, dearest Social Media stats friends!

After last month’s massive 12 month review, this month will be quite subdued with our normal monthly review and some extra fun stats to keep you on your toes.

July was an ominous month in Social Media land, with most platforms declining in users in both Australia and New Zealand. Most notably was Twitter, who also saw a drop in users in June. With no clear indication of why, perhaps the platform is simply failing to attract new users or make any refreshing changes to keep tweeps from coming back.

LinkedIn was a surprise, with users declining substantially in both countries. Perhaps users are not impressed with their new advertising techniques, or constant harassment to update your profile or endorse others skills.

Facebook however stood out in the crowd as its numbers soared. According to Facebook’s advertising tool, Facebook has increased in the last month by approximately 4% in Australia and New Zealand. This follows another large jump in June. As Facebook continues to make more and more changes to benefit both business and personal users, how will any other platform catch up?

And what about poor old (actually nowhere near poor, or really very old) forgotten Google+? It is reported that 625,000 people are joining Google + every day and according to the Social Ballot Google+ users have grown by 33% from June 2012 to March 2013, making it the second largest social network in the world. But how are we to know for sure, as Google still refuses to release the figures on its social platform’s users. Until they do, it is impossible to know how many users are active on the platform, and how many people have accounts by default of having a Gmail address or to take advantage of the peripheral features (such as hangouts) or inherent SEO benefits.

Now let’s look at some of the extra fun stats I was talking about:

I made several predictions for the next six months in my last blog post including that Facebook will remain the number one platform and that mobile is only going to get huger.  Confirming both these predictions, it has been revealed that 189 million of Facebook’s users ONLY access the platform via their mobile devices. Mobile also generates 30% of Facebook’s total ad revenue, a 7% increase over the last 6 months.

What does this mean? It means that its really really super duper important that you think about how your content will look on the small mobile screen. Further, you need to think about your Facebook advertising choices, for example some Facebook ads don’t appear on mobile, so it might be worth considering promoted posts or alternative mobile advertising options.

While not strictly Social Media, my favourite statistic that I came across in the last month was that 25% of smartphone owners ages 18–44 say they can’t recall the last time their smartphone wasn’t next to them. Why is it my favourite? Because it is so very true! I’m not going to deny that my iPhone can most of the time be seen as an extension of my arm. We really are (and finding it harder to resist) making ourselves available to the world 24/7.
